Tempest Tea's Monthly Newsletter

January 2005

A Storm is Brewing!

A Message from the Founders: Turning over a New Leaf

Happy New Year! We sincerely wish you health, happiness and prosperity in 2005. Have you made your resolutions? At Tempest, we resolve to pursue more organic products, increase our in-house blending to bring you even more delicious, unique drinks, and continue to fulfill our mission to educate consumers about the wonderful health benefits and delicious ease of a cup of premium loose-leaf tea. As founders, we resolve to find more balance in our lives, to appreciate the small moments, and to try to live each day with positive energy and a smile. (Okay, we also resolve to get these newsletters out more regularly!)

What do you resolve? To lose weight? Be more patient? Spend more wisely? Whatever your dreams this year, we hope you achieve them. We also hope, however, that they will not be all about focusing on the negative, but, at least in part, about affirming what is already very good and adding yet more of the positive. Turn over a new leaf in your thinking, and you may turn over a new leaf in your life.

What do we mean? For the last two years we have devoted ourselves to drinking, blending and brewing tea and healthy beverages. You see the results in Tempest, but we also feel the results in our personal lives. We simply feel better, and because we prefer the way tea makes us feel, we have given up coffee. As a result, we don't suffer coffee's ill effects. We don't wake up cranky (usually); we don't have caffeine jitters, headaches, and that gnawing, hungry sensation a cup of heavily roasted coffee leaves in its wake. Because we feel better, we look better. We exercise more, we eat more healthy foods, and we feel more balanced, less tense. We have added a positive - tea - and it has become a catalyst for other change.

You can apply these same principles to your resolutions. Instead of merely lamenting your appearance and vowing to change it, perhaps you will resolve to enjoy exercise more, so you will do it more, and that will lead you to feel better about yourself, eat better, and lose weight. Instead of feeling helpless, perhaps you will become active in a charity, politics, or school, and become a force for change. You will make a difference, and you will feel better. Perhaps you, too, will find tea to be a gateway to a healthier, balanced life. Whatever you do, by adding a dose of the positive, the rest often falls naturally into place.

It may only be a matter of perspective, but thinking in affirmative terms this new year rather than resolving to deprive yourself or kicking yourself for the negative may be as productive and useful for you as it has been for us. However you approach it, and whatever 2005 has in store, we wish you many good things, and we thank you for helping to make 2004 an exciting one.

Drinking to Improve Life: Put Your Tea where Your Mouth Is

Tea is great for your teeth! Recent studies have shown that tea is naturally high in fluoride, that wonderful cavity- preventing, tooth strengthening stuff that is lacking in many bottled and municipal water supplies. Tea is also proven to lower the risk of dental caries, or tooth decay. Finally, tea naturally inhibits the growth of oral bacteria that cause gingivitis to adhere to the gums.

It is true that prolonged drinking of tea of all colors will eventually lead to gradual staining of the teeth. It is not proven true, however, that tea causes more staining than any other colored beverage. To the contrary, coffee, colas, cigarettes, red wine, chocolate, and even some juices similarly stain teeth, as does the simple fact of aging. The staining effects of tea can be lessened by drinking it with food, brushing after meals that include tea, and seeking regular dental cleaning. They cannot be avoided by refraining from tea while continuing to partake in the other stuff, and that strategy would prevent you from achieving the wonderful oral and other health benefits of tea. So drink up, drink often . . . but don't forget to brush.

Drinking to Improve Your Lifestyle: The Planet

At Tempest, we are as committed to improving life on the planet as we are to improving the lives of our customers. To that end, we donate used tea leaves to an organic garden, recycle cans, use recycled paper products when available, and endeavor to waste as little food as possible by buying what we need, when we need it.

We encourage you to do your part by bringing in your Tempest tea tins for a refill of your favorite leaves. We will give you a discount on your purchase, and we will all improve the planet by creating a little less trash. We can also measure your tea into a small, sealed bag and discount your purchase if you have a storage tin at home.

Featured Teas of the Month

Our holidays were crammed with creating new tea and herbal blends, and we are proud to unveil the following featured teas of the month:

Black Thundercloud Masala Chai (New, organic blend):

Our own heavenly, organic, fair-trade blend of the spicy/ sweet drink that tastes and feels great on a cold day. Moderately caffeinated like all black teas, and bursting with the zing of black pepper, cinnamon, and ginger chips.

White Spice Masala Chai:

A white tea version of the classic, loaded with antioxidants, minimally caffeinated, and layered with sweet flavors. Not as spicy as the black chai, and subtly imparting a vanilla undertone.

Red Chai at Night (New, organic blend):

Our beautiful and smooth rooibos chai. Spicy and sweet, but caffeine free, with a softer finish.

Green Earth Masala Chai:

A slightly herbaceous, slightly floral variation of the classic chai flavors. Rich, healthful, and moderately caffeinated. Get all your antioxidants in this delicious form.

Nuptial:

A gorgeous marriage of flavors! Smooth black tea blended with delectable vanilla, cardamom and other delicious flavors. We love it hot, iced, with milk, sweetened, or not.

White Chocolate:

A new way to enjoy the healthful powerhouse of white tea. This precious white tea is subtly blended with chocolate in a unique tea that is calorie-free but loaded with taste.
