The Story of Tempest Tea | Our Retail Stores | About the Founders

The Story of Tempest Tea:

Tempest Tea was started by a Texas husband and wife in 2002. Eager to give up coffee but desiring a gentler source of caffeine, the two turned to tea and were quickly converted by its great range of tastes and amazing health benefits. Unimpressed with other products, however, they began to import and blend their own teas, using only premium leaves and the freshest blending ingredients. Consumer demand exploded, and a company was born.

Now Tempest offers over 75 varieties of loose-leaf and bagged teas and unique chai’s. Each one is hand-selected, expertly crafted, and supremely fresh.

Tempest’s motto is “Drinking to Improve Life.” We strive to bring you beverages that deliciously and naturally energize the mind, balance the spirit, and supplement the body’s power to fight disease. Our teas are full of antioxidants, which have been proven to decrease your risks of many illnesses and diseases and even aid in weight loss.

Tempest aims to improve not only your life and lifestyle, but also life on the planet. We seek the finest organic teas and organic blending ingredients, and we actively support the fair trade movement.

Whether you select Tempest Tea because it’s simply delicious, because it is great for you, because it enhances your lifestyle, or because you support the environment, your body, your mind and your mouth will thank you.

About the Founders:

Jody Rudman

Jody has achieved a lifetime of professional success in a short time. Jody was raised in Dallas and graduated from The Hockaday School. She attended Northwestern University, where she was a recognized campus leader and was selected twice to run Northwestern’s largest and most famous multi-million dollar student production. She received numerous academic awards and was one of fifty Americans chosen to live in an intensive cultural immersion and language program in Russia in 1989.

Jody attended one of the most prestigious law schools in the country, the University of Chicago. Again, Jody was recognized as a campus leader and received scholarship awards and job offers from premiere law firms. She began her legal career at Schiff Hardin and Waite in Chicago. There, she was entrusted with advanced work on important cases. She became a specialist in the field of ERISA litigation and authored a magazine article and an ERISA litigation manual.

In 1996, Jody returned to Dallas and joined Haynes & Boone. Before the expiration of one year, she was recruited to serve as one of seven top lieutenant litigators for the Texas Attorney General. For the remainder of that political administration, Jody litigated all of the highest-profile HMO and charitable trust cases in Texas, including a several billion-dollar lawsuit against Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, deceptive trade practice lawsuits against Texas’ six largest HMO’s, and a multi-million dollar trial against the founder and President of a local charity.

At the end of the political administration, Jody left to fulfill a lifelong dream of serving as a federal prosecutor. She spent three years with an undefeated record and unblemished reputation for pursuing deadbeat parents, closing down fraudulent businesses, deporting illegal immigrants, and pursuing internet criminals. In 2002, Jody was named and featured in “D Magazine” as one of Dallas’ best lawyers under 40.

After the birth of her second child, Jody took a hiatus from work outside the home to focus on raising her young children. Since 2003 she has expended her energies and leadership talent on this exciting concept.

Brian Rudman
Brian has followed a similar path of achievement and leadership. Brian attended Northwestern University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and European History while completing premedical studies. He served on and chaired numerous campus committees and was selected to be President of Students against Multiple Sclerosis, a nationwide organization. Brian and his committee coordinated sponsors, created and hosted special events, and raised over $60,000 for the cause.

Brian attended medical school at the University of Missouri, and then returned to Northwestern University for a residency in Anesthesiology. There, Brian was picked to be Chief Resident, where, in addition to an 80+ hour work week and academic studies, he was responsible for coordinating the location and call schedules of other residents, as well as planning a series of educational seminars on the business side of medicine.

After residency, Brian joined North Texas Anesthesia Consultants, a group practice of 20 physicians. He was appointed to the Executive Committee while still an associate, and within three years of joining became President of the group. After a series of business mergers, Brian continued to serve as President of his division, while also serving on the Board of Directors for the new corporation, which earned over $110 million in annual revenue. Brian was rapidly considered a key member of the Board and took a leadership role in issues related to corporate governance, finance and antitrust.

Due to differences in corporate philosophy, and to pursue more rapid growth, Brian led his division in a friendly break from the corporation, an experience which proved invaluable, as he had sole responsibility for selecting new management, financial institutions and attorneys. Having stepped down as President in 2003, Brian tackled the new business challenge of Tempest Tea.
